Central New York Weekend Guide

What to Do With the Kids: October 24–25

Monster trucks and trick-or-treating, a rare elephant birthday, free spooky science, historic-village Halloween and one remarkable 250th-anniversary road trip.

This is a rare two-good-days weekend

As of Wednesday morning, Syracuse is forecast mostly sunny near 61°F Saturday and sunny near 65°F Sunday. Mumford should reach about 62°F Saturday and 67°F Sunday; Ithaca is forecast near 60°F Saturday and 62°F Sunday. Even Ticonderoga looks dry and sunny, although cooler in the mid-50s. The decision is not which day avoids rain—it is whether Saturday belongs to the one-night Dome show, while Sunday carries the best outdoor plan.

Halloween Monster Jam at the JMA Wireless Dome

This is the weekend's true only-here, only-now choice. Monster Jam brings the stadium trucks to Syracuse Saturday, and this edition adds costumes plus trick-or-treating for children 14 and under during the optional Pit Party. The main show starts at 5 p.m.; the Pit Party runs 12:30–3:30 p.m., doors open at 3 and Trackside starts at 4.

DriveAbout 5–15 minutes
Main showSaturday at 5 p.m.
Pit Party12:30–3:30 p.m.

Why it fits: The machinery is the attraction, not background decoration. The Pit Party lets children see trucks and crews up close, collect autographs and take photos before the noise and scale of the full show. Costumes are permitted under event-specific rules, but props that resemble weapons, obstruct views or drag on the ground are prohibited.

Book/check first: Price seats, parking and the separate Pit Party access on the official Syracuse Monster Jam page. Everyone age 2 and older needs a ticket. Bring properly fitted hearing protection for every child and noise-sensitive adult; our family hearing-protection guide explains the fit check. Review the Dome bag and costume policies before leaving.

Zoo Boo Plus the Elephant Twins' Birthday

Zoo Boo returns Saturday and Sunday with trick-or-treat stations, keeper chats, animal encounters, games, photo stops and a costume parade, all included with normal zoo admission. Saturday is unusually good: the zoo's Asian elephant twins Yaad and Tukada turn four, and their herd receives special birthday enrichment at the upper elephant overlook at noon.

DriveAbout 10–20 minutes
Zoo BooSat. & Sun. 10–3
BirthdaySaturday at noon

Why Saturday wins: Plenty of places do daytime trick-or-treating; almost nowhere can pair it with a scheduled enrichment session for North America's only living Asian elephant twins. Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for ages 3–17 and seniors, and free for children 2 and under; members enter free.

Check first: Read the official Zoo Boo details and elephant birthday listing, then arrive early enough to be at the overlook before noon. Costumes and treat bags are encouraged. Use our zoo-with-kids guide to build a compact animal route around the event rather than marching every loop.

Spooky Science at the Sciencenter

The Sciencenter's annual Spooky Science program turns Sunday into a hands-on Halloween lab: families can explore eerie experiments and museum activities in costume from noon to 4. A live reptile encounter lands in the middle at 2 p.m., and a tidepool touch-tank session starts at 10:30 a.m. This is a real museum day with a strong event layered into it, not a table of crafts in a lobby.

DriveAbout 1 hr 10–25 min
Spooky ScienceSunday noon–4
AdmissionFree special event

Best version: Arrive by 10:20 if the touch tank matters, eat an early packed lunch or quick nearby lunch, then return for Spooky Science and the 2 p.m. reptile program. If four hours of open-ended science is enough, skip the morning animal session and start at noon.

Check first: Verify the day's sequence on the official Sciencenter calendar. The special event is listed as free, but parking and crowd procedures can change; confirm those details before the drive. Our family museum-day system helps set one anchor activity and a clean exit time.

Best classic Halloween · Mumford

Trick-or-Treat Through Genesee Country Village

Children follow pumpkins and lanterns through the 19th-century village, collecting candy or toy treats from eight historic porches. The day also includes close-up magic, a 1 p.m. costume parade, kid-friendly stories, heritage animals, historic gardens and access to six nature-center trails. It is more atmospheric and less commercial than a standard farm festival.

DriveAbout 1 hr 25–40 min
HoursSat. & Sun. 10–3
Parade1 p.m.

Why it earns the drive: The Halloween route sits inside a destination that can occupy the whole family even after the candy is gone. Sunday gets the warmer forecast and has kid-friendly stories at the Nature Center from 11–2; Saturday has its storytelling program in the village.

Book/check first: Buy the correct day's admission through the official Trick-or-Treat page and bring your own candy containers. The evening Spirits of the Past walk and All Hallows' Tea are already marked sold out, so do not build a two-event plan around them. Food service closes before the grounds do; note the Depot grill's 2 p.m. cutoff.

Most exceptional · Ticonderoga

Hold the Line for Liberty at Fort Ticonderoga

Fort Ticonderoga's season ends with a battle reenactment marking the 250th anniversary of the October 1776 stand that helped keep the Revolution alive. Programs interpret the weapons, tactics, fortifications and people of the Continental Army on the same ground and in the same season, exactly 250 years later. For a history-curious family, this is the unusually good option worth stretching the drive limit.

DriveAbout 3 hr–3 hr 20 min
DatesSaturday & Sunday
WeatherSunny; mid-50s to upper-50s

The honest fit: Go only if live history, cannons and fortifications will carry the children's attention; otherwise six-plus hours in the car is too much. Tickets are valid for two consecutive days, but from Syracuse this still works best as one very early day trip or an overnight—not an improvised late start.

Book/check first: Purchase admission in advance and download the visitor schedule from the official 250th-anniversary event page. Confirm which battle demonstration matters most before choosing your arrival time. Use our Adirondacks family guide and weather-cutoff plan for the long-drive decision.

Best indoor fallback · Corning

Great Glass Pumpkin Experiment at Corning Museum of Glass

Corning's fall program is a useful weather-proof plan even on a beautiful weekend. Saturday adds the Great Glass Pumpkin Experiment, where the Hot Glass Team turns molten glass into strange, colorful and sometimes monstrous pumpkins. The world's largest glass pumpkin, regular demonstrations and the hands-on galleries make the museum substantial enough to justify the drive.

DriveAbout 1 hr 45 min–2 hr
Special demoSaturday
Fall programThrough October 31

Best family value: Ages 17 and under receive free general admission, and paid admission is valid for two consecutive days. Optional Make Your Own Glass pumpkin projects are separate, have age minimums and are the part most likely to sell out.

Book/check first: Check the exact demonstration time and reserve any Studio project on the official Fall Fun page. Do not promise children they will make a pumpkin until you have a confirmed slot. Our Corning Museum with kids guide and Finger Lakes rainy-day plan cover the practical route.

My honest ranking for your family

  1. Monster Jam Saturday — the one-night event with the highest novelty; add the Pit Party only if close-up trucks and trick-or-treating justify the longer day.
  2. Zoo Boo Saturday — the best low-friction plan because the elephant twins' noon birthday enrichment makes this specific date special.
  3. Spooky Science Sunday — the strongest value and best hands-on choice, especially with the reptile session built in.
  4. Genesee Country Village Sunday — the most atmospheric traditional Halloween day, with warmer weather and enough beyond candy to earn the drive.
  5. Fort Ticonderoga — the most significant event here, but only for a family enthusiastic enough to accept the longest drive.
  6. Corning Saturday — the reliable indoor alternative and the right call if the glass-pumpkin demonstration sparks more interest than costumes.

If it were my weekend, I would choose Zoo Boo at opening Saturday, be at the elephant overlook before noon, and keep Monster Jam as the afternoon/evening anchor only if everyone is genuinely excited about the trucks. Sunday belongs to Spooky Science. For one big road trip, Fort Ticonderoga is the rare event that actually deserves bending the three-hour rule.
