What to Do With the Kids: September 5–7

The Fair is still the best family value this weekend, but Monday is the smart version because it adds a real finale. The Labor Day parade steps off from the Expo Center at 10:30 a.m., the grounds close earlier at 9 p.m., and fireworks end the 2026 Fair. Between those anchors, the kids can hit the animal exhibit and mini golf at the State Park area, the petting zoo, racing pigs, Circus Hollywood and the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show.

Dad plan: Arrive before 9:30, watch the parade, then work a triangle—State Park area, Family Fun Zone and one indoor show—before touching the Midway. That gives the day structure without turning it into an hour-by-hour hostage situation.

Buy/check first: Purchase admission and parking, save the official Monday schedule, and confirm the fireworks time. The official special-days page confirms the parade and closing-night fireworks. Ride tickets and wristbands are separate.

Sunday is one of those promotions that genuinely changes the family math. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., first pitch is at 5:35, every child 12 and under receives a voucher for a kids hot dog, chips, a fountain drink and ice cream, and fireworks follow the game. It is a complete holiday-night plan without spending the afternoon waiting for something to start.

Why it fits: A 5:35 start is late enough to feel special and early enough that fireworks do not become a midnight endurance test. Do not confuse it with Saturday: Saturday has Doc Gooden, a jersey giveaway and fireworks, but Sunday is the better family package.

Book/check first: Buy seats through the official homestand page and review NBT Bank Stadium's clear-bag rules. Fireworks are weather-dependent.

This is not an adult beer festival awkwardly wearing a family label. On Saturday, the historic village traces hops and grapes from field to finished food and drink. Costumed interpreters demonstrate harvesting and processing hops, visitors can tour one of the country's few working 19th-century breweries, and the historic kitchens prepare tastes from period recipes that used ale. You still get the full village, heritage animals, trades, gallery and nature center around the event.

Why it earns the drive: The event gives adults something interesting without reducing the children to passengers. The brewery machinery, working village and historic food are tangible; nobody needs to sit through a lecture about hops.

Book/check first: Buy museum admission and verify the program at the official Hop Harvest page. The festival happens only Saturday, September 5, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; the separate 19th-century brewing workshop may require its own registration.

Seabreeze is open all three days and its compact layout is the reason it beats a larger park for this particular weekend. Saturday and Sunday run 11 a.m.–8 p.m. for rides and 11 a.m.–7 p.m. for slides; Labor Day runs one hour shorter. Rochester is currently forecast near 71–72°F Saturday and Sunday, so treat the water park as a bonus instead of the whole argument for driving.

Why it fits: The family can split its day between coasters, classic rides, kiddie rides and water without the sprawling-park march. With a 6-year-old and a 10-year-old, that range matters more than raw ride count.

Buy/check first: Compare current admission, measure both kids in shoes, and verify the official operating calendar. The park warns that attractions can close for weather or maintenance. Bring swim gear, but start on dry rides unless the morning turns warmer than forecast.

Sunday currently looks excellent at Letchworth: mostly sunny and around 71°F. Enter from the Castile or Portageville side, concentrate on the southern waterfall area, add one overlook and the Humphrey Nature Center, then leave. The park is enormous; trying to “do Letchworth” is how a great scenery day becomes five hours of buckling and unbuckling.

Why it earns the drive: Upper and Middle Falls deliver major payoff with short walks, and the nature center gives the day a second act. The official page lists the pool through Labor Day, but 71°F makes it optional rather than essential.

Check first: Review the official park page and interactive map. Trail 7 from Middle Falls to the Genesee Arch Bridge is permanently closed; do not plan a through-walk there. Use our Letchworth with kids route for the sane version of the park.

Watkins Glen stays a top-tier family hike because the Gorge Trail packs 19 waterfalls into about a mile and the route goes beside and behind the water. Labor Day is operationally useful: the seasonal shuttle is still running daily through Monday, and the pool's 2026 season also ends September 7. That lets you climb the gorge and buy back the downhill with the shuttle instead of pretending every child enjoys reverse stairs.

Why it makes the list again: This is the last weekend of daily shuttle and pool operation, which materially improves the family version of the trip. Go early, wear shoes made for wet stone, and decide before starting whether the shuttle is part of the plan.
