The Great New York State Fair — but do it like a family mission
The Fair is the obvious answer this weekend, but “go to the Fair” is not a plan. The useful move is to arrive early, choose three included shows as anchors, and treat the Midway as an optional add-on instead of letting it eat the whole day.

Saturday family route
- 10:30 a.m. — 4-H Driving & Miniature Horse Show in the Toyota Coliseum.
- 11 a.m. — Corgi races in the Exposition Center; repeat shows run at 2 and 5.
- 12:30 p.m. — Circus Hollywood indoors, a smart midday cool-down.
- 4:30 p.m. — Ski Extreme's jet-ski/waterski stunt show near Suburban Park.
- 5 p.m. — Meet the Horses educational event, or pivot to the 6 p.m. Maddox Batson concert.
- 8 p.m. — Third Eye Blind if the family still has gas in the tank.
Sunday family route
- Start with the 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Holstein Dairy Cattle Open Show or arrive for the 11 a.m. corgi race.
- Use the 12:30 p.m. circus, 2:30 p.m. Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show, and 4:30 p.m. Ski Extreme as anchors.
- Music options are unusually deep: Gym Class Heroes at 1, Air Supply at 6, and Flo Rida at 8—all included with admission.

Seabreeze — the best full-scale road trip this weekend
If the kids want rides and water, Seabreeze is the strongest alternative to the Fair. It is closer than Old Forge, the Sunday temperature is currently better suited to water slides, and the park is compact enough that a family can do a lot without walking a county fair's worth of pavement.

Why it fits: A 6-year-old and a 10-year-old can both find a real day here—family rides, coasters, wave pool, slides and smaller-kid areas—without forcing everybody into the same speed all day.
Book/check first: Check the official operating calendar and compare online ticket options before leaving. Some attractions can close for weather or maintenance; pack swim gear but start on rides if the morning feels cool.

Clothesline Art & Fine Craft Festival — cheap, creative and substantial
This is the non-amusement-park road trip that still gives the children things to do. More than 300 artists fill the Memorial Art Gallery grounds, with live music, food vendors and a dedicated family zone. The kids' area includes collaborative clothespin sunflowers, trading cards, mosaics, bracelet-making, sensory activities and a quiet family space.

Why it fits: The price is low enough that you do not have to wring eight hours out of it. Let the kids make something, browse the best booths, eat, listen to a band and leave while everyone still likes art.
Book/check first: Buy a flexible day ticket at the official festival page. Free parking and an accessible shuttle run from Gleason Works' south lot from 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; pets, skates and skateboards are not allowed. If you add The Strong, treat it as a separate, separately ticketed second stop—not a casual free add-on.

Utica Zoo's Last Splash of Summer
Saturday's zoo visit comes with an actual extra layer rather than a vague “family fun” label. From 10 a.m.–3 p.m., the zoo is adding a DJ bubble party and water-conservation activities, including a kid-focused toy-duck rescue station. The activities are included with regular zoo admission.

Best forYounger kids + animal lovers
Why it fits: It gives Lily-age kids something playful and hands-on while the zoo itself keeps it from feeling like a two-hour bubble party with a long drive attached.
Book/check first: Confirm the event listing and current admission at Utica Zoo. Bring a change of clothes or at least a dry shirt; the event language promises water-themed activities, and “Last Splash” is not the day to gamble on staying clean.

Outdoor day · Finger Lakes
Taughannock Falls — walk first, swim second
For a true outdoor day without an amusement-park bill, do the easy gorge route to the falls before the midday heat, eat, then use the park's Cayuga Lake swimming area as the second act. The official park update says all trails are open and the guarded swim season runs daily through Labor Day, 11 a.m.–7 p.m.

EffortEasy gorge walk + optional swim
Why it fits: It has a big visual payoff without demanding a technical hike from a 6-year-old. The two-part structure also prevents the classic waterfall-trip problem: everybody sees the falls, then asks “now what?”

Easy local win · Fayetteville
Green Lakes — the anti-Fair-crowd plan
If nobody wants crowds or a highway, Green Lakes is unusually complete right now: the beach is scheduled 11 a.m.–7 p.m., boat rentals run from 10 a.m.–4 p.m., the Environmental Education Center is open noon–4, and the lake loop gives you a real walk before swimming.

Why it fits: You can choose the version the family actually has energy for: walk and leave, walk plus swim, or walk plus a rental boat and lunch. That flexibility is valuable on the same weekend half of Syracuse is heading toward the Fairgrounds.

My honest ranking for your family
If you only pick one, make it the NYS Fair on Saturday and use the included shows to keep the day from becoming nothing but food and ride lines.
- NYS Fair Saturday — best combination of novelty, value and zero travel.
- Seabreeze Sunday — best if the kids vote for water and rides.
- Taughannock Saturday — best memorable day without a big admission bill.
- Clothesline — best low-cost special event and the least generic choice.
- Utica Zoo — strongest for the younger-child energy level.
- Green Lakes — smartest easy fallback, not filler.
The one plan I would skip
Water Safari is still a great family park, but Old Forge is currently forecast around 70°F Saturday and 76°F Sunday. With Seabreeze closer and Rochester warmer, I would save the two-hour Old Forge haul for a hotter day unless the kids specifically demand Water Safari.
