1. Altamont Fair — Last Weekend of the 2026 Fair
If the family wants rides, animals and enough going on that nobody has to agree on one activity, this is the strongest fair play. Saturday, August 22 includes the carnival midway, horse show, make-and-take crafts, STEM exhibits and the Sherman Lumberjack Show. Sunday is the finale, with Dynamo Dogs, racing pigs, the Royal Hanneford Circus, barn activities and a demolition derby.
Why it makes the list: There is enough scheduled entertainment to build an entire day without spending every minute feeding ride tickets into the midway.

2. Syracuse Mets — Bluey, Kids Eat Free & Run the Bases
Sunday's 1:05 p.m. Syracuse Mets game is unusually family-friendly: Bluey is scheduled to appear, it's Kids Eat Free Sunday, and kids can run the bases after the game. It is the kind of local outing that gives you a real event without surrendering the whole day to driving.

3. Watkins Glen State Park — Gorge Day
If you want the weekend to feel like an actual adventure, take the Gorge Trail. Watkins Glen packs 19 waterfalls into a remarkably compact gorge, with stone paths, bridges and sections that put you right beside the water. Pair it with lunch in Watkins Glen or a stop along Seneca Lake.

4. Onondaga Lake Park — Bikes, Playground & an Easy Family Afternoon
Not every weekend needs a two-hour drive. Onondaga Lake Park is the pressure-release option: shoreline trails, room for bikes and scooters, playground time and enough space to let the kids burn energy without turning the outing into an expedition.

5. MOST — The Smart Weather Backup
If storms wreck the outdoor plan, the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology is a much better pivot than spending the afternoon wandering a mall. The downtown museum combines hands-on science exhibits, dinosaurs, machines, a large indoor play structure and dome-theater programming.
