My first call: Clayton and the Thousand Islands. It gives you a genuinely nice hotel, a boat-and-castle centerpiece, a pool backup and only about 90 minutes in the car. Niagara has the biggest wow factor. Lake Placid is the best mountain-hotel escape.

Clayton + the Thousand Islands
This is the cleanest answer when one parent wants a nice getaway and the kids still need a real centerpiece. Stay on the river, take one substantial cruise, then stop scheduling.
The two-night plan
- Friday: Riverfront check-in, Clayton walk, dinner and indoor pool.
- Saturday: The 3½-hour Boldt Castle and Two Nation cruise; official departures run through September 7.
- Sunday: Antique Boat Museum or a short Ride the River trip, then home before dinner.
Know the tradeoff: The cruise and castle consume most of Saturday—in a good way. Anyone prone to motion sickness should prepare before boarding.

Niagara Falls + Lewiston
Do the American side and skip the border complication. The falls, boat and Cave of the Winds easily justify two nights without manufacturing filler.
The two-night plan
- Friday: Check into quieter Lewiston and walk to dinner.
- Saturday: Maid of the Mist at opening, lunch, Cave of the Winds, then illuminated falls after dark.
- Sunday: Niagara Power Vista or Aquarium before the drive home.
Know the tradeoff: Labor Day crowds will be real. Arriving at opening matters more than buying a packaged tour.

Lake Placid
The grown-up choice that still works for a hockey kid and a six-year-old: a walkable village, Mirror Lake, an indoor pool and Olympic history instead of endless driving between stops.

- Friday: Check in on Main Street, lake walk and pool.
- Saturday: Whiteface Cloudsplitter Gondola or Veterans' Memorial Highway; both are scheduled daily through September 7.
- Sunday: Olympic Museum and Olympic Center, then one good lunch before leaving.
Know the tradeoff: This is probably the highest room bill, and the mountain attractions lose value when visibility is poor.

Old Forge
This is the full-send final summer weekend. Water Safari is scheduled through September 6, giving Saturday or Sunday a proper all-day mission while Friday stays intentionally light.
The two-night plan
- Friday: Arrive, eat, arcade or lake walk, early bed.
- Saturday: Water Safari from opening until the family is done—not until closing.
- Sunday: Bald Mountain/Rondaxe fire tower only if legs and weather agree; otherwise town, lake and home.
Know the tradeoff: This is the least relaxing choice for the adults. Water temperature, rain and final-weekend crowds can change the value fast.
Lake George
Lake George has enough density to survive a holiday weekend without spending the entire trip relocating the car. The smart version is one boat activity, one historic stop and a hotel close to the village.
The two-night plan
- Friday: Village walk, lakefront dinner and pool.
- Saturday: Morning cruise or beach; Fort William Henry after lunch.
- Sunday: Prospect Mountain Highway if open and clear, then leave before the main southbound crush.
Know the tradeoff: Lake George can become expensive noise on a holiday weekend. Pay for location so you can park once.

Rochester: The Strong + Seabreeze
This is the lowest-risk kid weekend. One excellent indoor day and one amusement/waterpark day give you a full trip without betting everything on sunshine.
The two-night plan
- Friday: Check in downtown and use The Strong's Friday evening hours.
- Saturday: Seabreeze; rides are posted 11–8 and slides 11–7.
- Sunday: Return to The Strong for whatever the kids refused to leave, then easy drive home.
Know the tradeoff: It feels more like a kid mission than a romantic getaway. The upside is almost zero planning fragility.

Corning + Watkins Glen
One serious museum and one serious gorge. This pairing earns two nights because neither stop has to be rushed or sacrificed to the weather.

- Saturday: Corning Museum of Glass, live demonstration and prebooked Make Your Own Glass if available.
- Sunday: Watkins Glen Gorge Trail at opening, with a hard stair/energy checkpoint.
Know the tradeoff: Make Your Own Glass can sell out, and the gorge can close for hazardous conditions. The museum is the strong bad-weather anchor.

Cooperstown
Short drive, walkable core, baseball for Jacob and a living-history farm that keeps the weekend from becoming one long display-case marathon.
The two-night plan
- Friday: Main Street, lakefront and dinner.
- Saturday: Baseball Hall of Fame during extended pre-Labor-Day hours.
- Sunday: Fenimore Farm, open daily 10–5 through September 13.
Know the tradeoff: If nobody cares about baseball, move this below Buffalo and Corning. Village lodging can cost more than the short drive suggests.

Buffalo Canalside
Stay on the waterfront and treat Buffalo as the destination instead of a hallway to Niagara. It gives you ships, canals, food and a children's museum without duplicating the falls trip.

- Saturday: Naval & Military Park, waterfront lunch and family activity.
- Sunday: Explore & More, posted 10–3 on September 6, then home.
Know the tradeoff: Explore & More is between major exhibits this weekend, so do not make it the sole reason for the trip.

Letchworth + Geneseo
This is the lower-cost reset: a comfortable base in Geneseo, one controlled waterfall loop and enough unplanned hotel time that the weekend still feels like a break.

- Saturday: Upper Falls, Middle Falls, Inspiration Point and lunch—then stop.
- Sunday: Nature center or one short trail based on weather and legs.
Know the tradeoff: This is outdoors-first. Heavy rain or poor visibility removes much of the payoff, although the hotel makes bailing out painless.

First: check the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel and a noon Clayton Boldt Castle cruise. Second: compare Niagara Crossing if the family wants a larger experience. Third: check Golden Arrow only if the room price does not make everybody resent Lake Placid before arriving.
